Blackpool: Tangerines boss revels in team’s spirited play-off win

Blackpool boss Gary Bowyer has hailed his team’s spirit following their 2-1 victory over Exeter City to secure promotion to Sky Bet League One.

The Tangerines took the lead twice at the National Stadium as David Wheeler put the Grecians level at half-time.

Brad Potts’ neat finish on four minutes gave Bowyer’s side the lead before Wheeler levelled five minutes before the break, taking advantage of Exeter’s growing pressure.

But the result was sealed with just under half-an-hour remaining as Mark Cullen poked home from close range.

The Tangerines lost stand-in captain Tom Aldred midway through the first-half through an Achilles injury which saw the defender fight back tears as he left the hallowed turf.

Many Blackpool supporters chose to boycott the final in protest against the Club’s ownership, but those that travelled to the National Stadium saw the Tangerines achieve promotion to the third tier of English football at the first time of asking.

“We got a fantastic start and we showed a lot of guts and determination against a very good Exeter team,” boss Bowyer stated.

“We were clinical with our opportunities today and I think that was the difference.

“I can’t stress how proud I am of these players because a lot of them are on one leg.

“It was unbelievable the effort that they showed.”

Speaking about the off-the-field problems at Bloomfield Road, Bowyer said: “I can’t control that, I have no control over that.

“We can only affect the training and coaching and working with the players.”
