Exeter City today (May 28) lost in the Sky Bet League Two Play-Off Final against Blackpool, meaning that they will be playing in the fourth tier of English football again.
The final at Wembley finished 2-1 to Blackpool, with Tangerines frontman Mark Cullen scoring the winner in the second half.
And this result could be good news for Leeds United fans. The Whites have been linked with a move for Exeter City star Ollie Watkins for a number of weeks now, and with the youngster losing in the Play-Off final, the chances of him looking for a move to a higher division has increased.
Watkins won the EFL young player of the year after impressing throughout the season with Exeter, helping them to a fourth place finish in Sky Bet League Two.
He continued his impressive performances into the Play-Offs, scoring two goals in the Semi Final second leg at home to Carlisle and helping them earn their place at Wembley.
However, it wasn’t to be for 21 year old Watkins, who will now probably look to move up the leagues with a different club.
It isn’t just Leeds United who are interested in acquiring the EFL young player of the year. Derby County have reportedly tabled a bid of £4million for the talented attacking midfielder, who is widely tipped to have a big future in football.
