REVIEW: The past week at Leeds United

It has been a whirlwind few days for everyone associated with Leeds United Football Club.

The week began with rumours that Garry Monk was set to negotiate a new deal at Elland Road. Reports suggested that they were set to extend his contract by a further year.

The transfer rumours from previous weeks continued, and Leeds United were consistently linked with high profile names. The first player to be linked with a move to Elland Road was Poland international Mateusz Klich. The midfielder is currently plying his trade in the Dutch Eredivise with FC Twente, but the 29 year old, who has been capped 10 times by Poland, was said to be extremely interested in a move to Elland Road.

May 23 delivered the news that Leeds United fans had been waiting to hear for a long time. Andrea Radrizzani agreed a deal with Massimo Cellino to buy his 50% stake in the club, meaning that Radrizzani would now own 100% of Leeds United. Understandably, Leeds United fans were ecstatic with the news that the club was in new hands, and were looking forward to a positive future.

That positive future seemed even brighter the next day, when young talent Ronaldo Vieira agreed a deal to stay at Elland Road until the end of the 2020/21 season. New Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani tweeted: “Congratulations. We are very proud of you.” Leeds United fans responded to Radrizzani’s tweet, and seemed thrilled at the unity that was surrounding the club.

Then came more good news. Following the completion of his takeover at Leeds United, Andrea Radrizzani stated that he intended to buy back Elland Road. This received a mixed reception from Leeds United fans, but it showed the intention that the new Italian owner had.

The optimism amongst Leeds United fans soon turned to heartbreak, when Garry Monk announced his resignation from the club. After the excitement and positivity that the previous days had created, this firmly sent Leeds supporters crashing back down to earth. Of course, they reacted to the news, and it was fair to say there was a completely different outlook on everything after the news broke.
