Bristol City: Robins place bid for Swindon midfielder

Sky Bet Championship side Bristol City have reportedly placed a bid for Iraqi midfielder Yaser Kasim.

The Robins will look to tempt the 26-year-old to Ashton Gate, however, they will be battling two other clubs who have also placed offers for the former Tottenham Hotspur youngster.

Kasim, who was offered a professional contract with Premier League Spurs, began life with Luton Town and Macclesfield Town in non-league football before signing for Swindon in the summer of 2013.

After the loss of Luke Freeman in January to Queens Park Rangers, and the temperamental loan signing of David Cotterill, coach Lee Johnson may be keen to strengthen the midfield department.

Kasim has become a fan-favourite at The County Ground following his 119 League appearances for the Robins, helping the Wiltshire side to the Sky Bet League One play-off final at Wembley Stadium two years ago.

In that period, in which Kasim was instrumental in reaching the promotion final, West Ham United and Swansea were heavily linked with signing the midfielder.

But the Premier League sides could not tempt the 26-year-old to the top-flight of English football. Kasim returned from the Asian Cup with this speculation – after helping his country to the semi-finals – but he was quickly sidelined from first team action following a knee ligament injury.

Kasim is set to meet up with the Iraq national team for their World Cup qualifier against Japan next month.

The experienced midfielder has had a tricky history with his national team, having announced his international retirement due to a disagreement with former captain Younis Mahmoud in 2015, before returning to the international scene but once again being sacked last October.
