Cheltenham Town secure signing of relegated midfielder

Sky Bet League Two side Cheltenham Town have signed 27-year-old midfielder Nigel Atangana from Leyton Orient, according to BBC Sport.

The French midfielder made 29 appearances for Orient in 2016-17, a campaign which proved disappointing for many reasons, but off-the-field problems took the headlines at the London club.

In January 2016 Atangana signed for the O’s from seaside side Portsmouth, however his 18-month contract has come to an end – allowing the Gloucestershire side to swoop in.

Atangana started his career in England with non-league football, having performed exceptionally at Havant and Waterlooville. The former Bury trialist impressed enough at the National League South level to warrant a move to Portsmouth in 2014.

But Gary Johnson has since been able to tempt the Paris-born midfielder to Gloucestershire.

Speaking after making his third signing of the summer, Johnson said: “He’s a player we identified a little while ago, we like his energy, power and pace. We think he’s a bit like Paul Pogba but he thinks he’s like Patrick Viera. Either one of those will do!”

Johnson makes the midfielder his third signing of the summer after signing a new contract himself on Friday, as well as signing midfielder Kevin Dawson from Johnson’s former club Yeovil as well as Jamie Grimes from Non-League side Dover.

The sixty-one-year-old managed to avoid relegation back to Non-League football on the penultimate weekend of the season after winning the National League South title in his first full campaign with the Robins.

The Gloucestershire side’s boss undertook heart surgery in March but admits that he has now fully fit.
