Newcastle United and six other teams are in the chase to sign Charleroi’s Clinton Mata according to a report from Belgian publication La Derniere Heure.
The Magpies want to sign a new right back to compete with last year’s signing of DeAndre Yeldin. They need more depth in their defence now they are going to play in the Premier League and are looking across the world to find the man who can become a key player in their back four. And they seem to have finally found that person in Belgium.
The man they want to sign is Mata, a full back who currently plays for Charleroi. The 24-year-old has been in great former over the last few months and is also versatile as he can also play in midfield, meaning he could fill in there should an injury crisis hit Newcastle. He has also got six caps for Angola after he switched his national allegiance to them back in 2014.
But Newcastle will find it tough to sign Mata as he is one of the most wanted men in Europe with six other clubs interested in signing him. Just in his native Belgium the likes of Anderlecht, Genk and Gent want him while elsewhere in Europe Nice, Marseille and Feyenoord also want to sign him. The value that Charleroi would want, if they are willing to sell at all, is currently unknown but they will be able to ramp up the price with so many teams interested in signing him.
