Garry Monk releases statement explaining his resignation from Leeds United

It came as a surprise to all football fans when Garry Monk resigned from his role as manager of Leeds United.

The former Swansea City boss had enjoyed a good season with the Whites, as the finished seventh in the Sky Bet Championship.

Everyone thought that when Andrea Radrizzani completed his takeover of Leeds United, Garry Monk would sign a new deal to keep him at the club, but it was not to be.

Monk handed in his resignation this afternoon (May 25), and has since posted a tweet with a statement explaining his exit to Leeds United fans.

He began the statement by saying: “It is with huge disappointment that my time at Leeds United has come to an end.”

Monk confirmed that he did have intentions to remain at Elland Road, stating that he had seen himself staying at the club for many years, but said that: “ultimately no agreement could be reached.”

He continued to describe the “true honour” of working at such a successful and historic club as Leeds United, saying that he hopes one day the Whites will make a return to the Premier League.

He signed off the statement by giving his thanks to everyone involved at the club.

Monk gave his thanks to the players, the first team staff, the academy staff, as well as Massimo Cellino and Andrea Radrizzani.

His final thanks was to the fans of Leeds United, who he describes as “amazingly loyal and passionate.”
