Reading to compete with Middlesbrough and Stoke City for signature of €4m rated defender

Reading are set to compete with Middlesbrough and Stoke City to try and sign Nancy’s Modou Diagne according to a report from French publication L’Equipe via Sports Witness.

The 23-year-old defender is coming off the back of what was a miserable season for him as he was unable to stop French side Nancy from getting relegated from Ligue 1. But with him being highly rated, it is unlikely that he will stay with the club now that they will be competing in Ligue 2. And this has attracted the attention of several teams from England who would like to sign him.

Premier League side Stoke as well as recently relegated team Middlesbrough are in competition to sign Diagne and even though their status for next season is yet to be confirmed, Reading are also looking to sign the defender. All three clubs believe that even though Nancy were relegated, none of it was the fault of Diagne who was able to put in good performances despite the relative form of the team. And they are all attracted by the valuation that Nancy have put on Diagne, with them believing he is worth €4m, just under £3.5m in pounds. And this report suggests they may also be willing to take less.

But if Reading want to sign Diagne it will help if they get promoted to the Premier League. They are set to face Huddersfield Town in the Championship play-off final on Monday and a win will see them return to the top tier of English football.
