Mansfield Town have signed David Mirfin from Scunthorpe United on a free transfer as confirmed by the club website.
The 32-year-old defender had been a favourite at Scunthorpe and was a regular this year when they made the Sky Bet League One play-offs but despite that, the Iron decided to release him at the end of his contract this summer. But Mirfin has landed on his feet as he will now play for Mansfield after he signed a deal to play for them next season.
What will really make Mansfield fans excited about the signing of Mirfin is the experience he has got getting promoted. He has managed to help teams jump up a league on multiple occasions, having been part of the Scunthorpe team that got promoted to the Sky Bet Championship in 2009 and before that he was part of the great defence that Huddersfield Town had as they were promoted from what was then known as Division Three.
After the completion of the signing, Mansfield head coach Steve Evans said: “I watched Scunthorpe last season on a number of occasions where David stood out,”
“His competence in defending and his willingness to win every header that came into his box was a big reason why Scunthorpe went so close to securing Championship football last season.”
“I must admit it was a surprise to myself when I read that Scunthorpe were not going to take him forward in their journey, but every management team has different options and opinions.”
“We were in a queue to speak to David, amongst a number of clubs. I met the boy on three to four occasions and it’s fair to say that we got on really well and he wanted to buy into a project. This is a very exciting project.”
“He is an outstanding centre-back, even for the league above.”
