The Sun understands that Middlesbrough wish to hold talks with Leeds United head coach Garry Monk over becoming their next manager. Monk is soon out of contract at Elland Road and rumours about his future has been rife for a while now. Boro chairman Steve Gibson wants him to guide the club back into the Premier League.
In recent days, Sky Bet have made Monk the heavy odds-on favourite to become the next manager at the Riverside Stadium. Steve Agnew has been in caretaker charge ever since Aitor Karanka was dismissed from his duties. Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs is another name that has been heavily linked to the vacancy too.
Gibson was hoping that Agnew would build up a significant case for him to remain on in the role, however results since he has been at the helm have not been too inspiring. The club are now back in the Sky Bet Championship after just one season back in the top flight. Despite just missing out on the play-offs, Monk improved his reputation for guiding Leeds into contention, playing an attractive brand of football in the process.
It remains to be seen what the future does hold for Monk. Upon his appointment last summer, many were left wondering how long Massimo Cellino would give him in the job. He has seen out his initial contract, and it is still unclear if the club are willing to offer an extension. This doubt over his future could be to the gain of Middlesbrough, who are likely to be given funds by Gibson to ensure a strong challenge is produced to get them back into the Premier League at the first attempt.
