Top 50 Players of the EFL – 5th: Jonjo Shelvey (Newcastle United)

Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has been voted by you as the 5th best player in the EFL.

Over the last month, we have been gathering votes from you to find the best managers and players in the EFL. And after counting the votes, we have discovered you think that Shelvey is the 5th best player in the Football League.

When Rafa Benitez took Newcastle United down to the Sky Bet Championship, he wanted experienced players that he knew could bring them straight back up. Jonjo Shelvey was one of his first signings. Shelvey is a midfielder with plenty of Premier League experience, that Rafa Benitez knew would dominate games in the second tier, and that is exactly what he did. He was central to most things that Newcastle did well, controlling possession in almost every game. He has played 42 times for Newcastle United this season. He has found the back of the net five times, and assisted nine goals for his team mates, but his importance to Newcastle’s successes this season goes far beyond goals and assists. Playing at the heart of midfield, the tempo of the game is often dictated by Shelvey. His passing is second to none when it comes to players in the Championship, and he’s not too bad at tackling either.

Shelvey will be looking forward to a return to the Premier League next season, and will be hoping to potentially even force his way back into the England squad.
