Top 50 Players of the EFL – 4th: Dwight Gayle (Newcastle United)

Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle has been voted by you as the 4th best player in the EFL.

Over the last month, we have been gathering votes from you to find the best managers and players in the EFL. And after counting the votes, we have discovered you think that Gayle is the 4th best player in the Football League.

The rise of Dwight Gayle is another rags to riches story. Just six years ago, the striker was playing for Non-League Stansted, before securing a move to local side Dagenham and Redbridge. He failed to make the grade at the Essex club, and was loaned out to another Non League side, this time Bishops Stortford. While at Stortford he attracted the interest of Peterborough United, who signed him for approximately £500,000 in 2012. He did an excellent job at Posh, but was unable to keep them in the Sky Bet Championship. He earned his move to the Premier League to join Crystal Palace. He struggled for game time at Selhurst Park, but always seemed to deliver whenever he did play. Last summer he was sold to recently relegated Newcastle United, in a bid to revive his career, and he certainly did that.

Dwight Gayle has been excellent for Newcastle United this year, helping them lift the Sky Bet Championship title. The frontman has scored 25 goals in the league this season, in just 32 games, a quite astounding record. He was the second top scorer in the league, but arguably would have moved up the rankings had he played more. He also picked up two assists in the season. He is a natural finisher, who will be looking forward to playing Premier League football again next season.
