Yeovil Town’s Ollie Bassett could be set to a shock move to Barnsley according to a report from Somerset Live.
The 19-year-old midfielder was signed by Yeovil back in 2015 and was considered as a developmental prospect. But while he was able to make his competitive debut for Yeovil, he would only ever make two appearances for the Glovers and was obviously not liked enough by head coach Darren Way as he never made it into the first team under him.
It was no surprise then to see that Yeovil announced their retain list that Bassett was one of the players who were let go at the end of their contract. With the Somerset side being a team that narrowly avoided relegation from Sky Bet League Two this season and Bassett being a player that couldn’t get into that team, you’d expect that he would end up falling into non-league and playing for a team in that area while he tries to show he is still capable of competing in the EFL.
However he could be end for a shock move up the league ladder as this report suggests that Barnsley are looking to sign him up. The Tykes have a very impressive academy and have had several of their prospects break into the first team over the last few years but are looking for more players to be in their developmental squad. And even though the Yeovil coaching staff did not see enough in Bassett, Barnsley’s do and he could be set to join their youth system this summer.
