Top 50 Players of the EFL – 16th: Aiden McGeady

Preston North End winger Aiden McGeady has been voted by you as the 16th best player in the EFL.

Over the last month, we have been gathering votes from you to find the best managers and players in the EFL. And after counting the votes, we have discovered you think that McGeady is the 16th best player in the Football League.

McGeady was in a low point in his career last season. He had been loan at Sheffield Wednesday the year before but while they would make the Sky Bet Championship play-off final, that wasn’t down to him. He failed to impress and was actually allowed to join up with the Republic of Ireland squad for Euro 2016 early instead of competing with the rest of the squad in the end of season lottery.

So while he still had a big name from his time at Celtic, many saw his loan at Preston as the last time he could prove himself in the English leagues. But maybe because of all the pressure on his shoulders, McGeady ended up having one of the best seasons of his life and became Preston’s star player as they came close to getting a place in the play-offs. In the end, he scored eight goals for the Lilywhites and is now a favourite at Deepdale.

McGeady’s future is currently in doubt as he has now returned to Everton following the end of his loan. But Preston are interested in signing him on a permanent deal and the winger may end up back in Lancashire soon enough.
