Retained List: Club captain among the casualties at relegated Hartlepool

Hartlepool United have today unveiled their retained list, which has seen the relegated Pools confirm that nine players have been made free agents. New deals have been offered to three more, whilst an option has been taken to extend the stay of one more first-team player.

It was certainly a season to forget at Victoria Park and whilst they are putting their squad in place, Hartlepool are still without a manager. Matthew Bates took over as caretaker after David Jones left with only a few games remaining.

The highest profile departure is that of captain and striker Billy Paynter. He didn’t feature as much as he’d have liked last season and also formed part of the coaching staff as well. Nevertheless, the experienced frontman will be looking to fix himself up with a new club as soon as possible. Kieran Green has been released and he has already secured a move to Gateshead, who will be in the same league as Hartlepool next season. Midfielders Jordan Richards started 12 league games and he too can go. Completing the list of departures are Ben Dudzinski, Rob Jones, James Martin, James Orrell, Ben Pollock and Connor Smith.

New contracts have been offered to Carl Magnay, Rhys Oates and Brad Walker. They are likely to be important players at a lower level should they agree to remain with the club. An option has been taken up by the club to ensure promising youngster Devante Rodney is still a Hartlepool United player as well.

Released: Ben Dudzinski, Kieran Green (will join Gateshead), Rob Jones, James Martin, Jake Orrell, Billy Paynter, Ben Pollock, Jordan Richards & Connor Smith.

Offered new contracts: Carl Magnay, Rhys Oates & Brad Walker.

Option taken to extend existing deal: Devante Rodney.
