Top 50 Players of the EFL – 18th: Jota (Brentford)

Brentford midfielder Jota has been voted by you as the 18th best player in the EFL.

Over the last month, we have been gathering votes from you to find the best managers and players in the EFL. And after counting the votes, we have discovered you think that Jota is the 18th best player in the Football League.

At the start of the season, not many Brentford fans would have been thinking about Jota. He had been back in Spain, on loan at Eibar and with that move set to last until the end of the season and his contract set to expire then, it seemed like his time at Griffin Park was over. But during the January transfer window, head coach Dean Smith decided to recall Jota and that ended up being one of the best decisions he has made since becoming their manager.

The 25-year-old midfielder completely changed Brentford’s fortunes and while they wouldn’t challenge for a Sky Bet Championship play-off spot, they looked like they could have done it when the Spaniard was starring for the Bees. In the end he would score 12 goals in 30 appearances and because of that great goalscoring rate, from midfield no less, he quickly became one of the most feared players in the league.

At the end of the season, Jota had a clause activated in his contract that would keep him at a club for another year. And now that his future at Griffin Park is secure, he’ll hope to push the Bees forward and get them a play-off spot.
