Newcastle United are keeping a close eye on Burnley’s Ashley Barnes according to a report from ESPN.
The Magpies were recently promoted back to the Premier League after becoming the champions of the Sky Bet Championship and they have quickly got to the business of signing the players they need to make an impact now they are back in the top tier of English football. One thing that head coach Rafa Benitez is keen to do is add to his attacking options so they aren’t found out next season and is looking players who could be great additions to his squad.
And one of the men they’ve been taking a closer look at in the last few weeks is Barnes who currently plays for Burnley. The 27-year-old striker is coming off the back of what has been a decent season and scored six goals as the Clarets once again avoided relegation. They are currently in 15th place with 40 points with just one game to go.
But while Newcastle are interested in signing Barnes, they will be facing competition to sign the forward should they move forward with that deal. Crystal Palace are also looking into signing the forward as they too want to add more attacking options and have seen the best of Barnes this season after he scored twice against them earlier in the season. And so now the two teams could end up in a bidding war should they look to move forward with their interest later on in the summer.
