Retained List: Five departures confirmed by Oxford United

Sky Bet League One side Oxford United have not released an official retained list as of yet and Michael Appleton says they may not do so. However, he has confirmed that five players have been told that they can leave the Kassam Stadium this summer.

Five men are out of contract and as such can depart the U’s. Appleton oversaw a promising campaign for Oxford, seeing them just miss out on the play-offs and also reach the Checkatrade Trophy Final too. Goalkeeper Scott Shearer has recently signed for the club, so one new face will definitely be linking up with them at least. Appleton says the reason for not issuing a usual retained list is because he doesn’t expect big changes this summer at the club.

Benji Buchel, a Liechtenstein international goalkeeper, is one of the five to leave. He spent time away on loan at Barnet and failed to appear at all in the first-team when with Appleton’s men. Midfielder Josh Ashby however has signed a new one-year deal. He has suffered with a bad knee injury but this deal means he can recover with the club and be given an opportunity once he recovers.

Defender Robbie Cundy, who spent the second half of last season in the Vanarama National League with Southport, also exits the club. Other youngsters Jordan Graham, Jonny Giles, who also ended last season on loan in the National League with Aldershot Town, and defender Miles Welch-Hayes complete the list of those to be departing.

Released: Benji Buchel, Robbie Cundy, Jordan Graham, Jonny Giles & Miles Welch-Hayes.

Signed new one-year contract: Josh Ashby.
