Sheffield United confirm signing of League Two youngster

Sheffield United have today (May 15) confirmed the signing of young Hartlepool midfielder Nathan Thomas.

The Blades announced the signing on their official website, and confirmed that he had joined the club for an undisclosed fee.

The 22 year old has signed a three year deal at the recently promoted Yorkshire club.

Thomas was one of the highlights in what was an awful season for Hartlepool, as they suffered relegation from the English Football League.

He scored nine goals in 34 appearances during his season with the Sky Bet League Two club.

Sky Bet Championship clubs such as Leeds United and Bristol City had shown an interest in signing Thomas, but it is Sheffield United who have got their hands on him.

Speaking about the transfer, Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder said: “Nathan is someone we have tracked for a long time and is a talented young player. He was Hartlepool’s outstanding player last season and we believe, in our environment, he has the ability to push on to the next level, like a few that we brought in last season did.”

“There were a number of clubs interested in Nathan’s signature and we are delighted that he has chosen to further his career with us.”

Nathan Thomas also commented on the move, saying: “I’m aware that Chris Wilder has tried to sign me before and I enjoyed speaking to him. I didn’t want this dragging on through the summer, I knew what I wanted to do and now I can concentrate on getting my head down at the start of pre-season.”

The midfielder becomes the Blades’ second signing of the summer, after it was confirmed that Ched Evans had returned to Bramall Lane earlier this month.
