Newcastle United set to be offered Southampton star

Newcastle United are set to be offered the chance to sign Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez, according to ChronicleLive.

The 27 year old is expected to leave Southampton this year after struggling to hold down a place in the starting line up, and it is believed that his representatives have been in touch with the Sky Bet Championship winners to see if they would be interested in his services.

Newcastle United have already been linked with a lot of players with Premier League experience, and they look set to complete the signing of Christian Atsu, who was on loan at the club last season, in the coming days.

Rodriguez and Atsu both play on the wing, but it is reported that Benitez would still be interest in the Englishman.

Rodriguez was a regular starter at Southampton until he suffered a horrific knee injury in 2014, which kept him out for 11 months.

Since recovering from his injury, Rodriguez has appeared 49 times for the Saints, but many of these have been from the bench.

His current deal runs out in two years time, but he is considered surplus to requirements at St Marys.

He’s got plenty of experience in the top flight, having played for both Burnley and Southampton there.

Rodriguez has also been capped once by England, appearing in a 2-0 defeat against Chile at Wembley.

He was expected to be part of Roy Hodgson’s squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil before he suffered his serious injury.
