Newcastle United are planning to make a move to sign Celtic’s Jozo Simunovic and Efe Ambrose according to a report from The Scottish Sun.
While the Magpies do have a rock solid centre-back pairing in the shape of Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark, the club are worried about the depth behind them going into next season when they will be making their return to the Premier League. They do have Grant Hanley but after an underwhelming first season at St James Park he is set to be sold off, meaning Newcastle are now on the look out for a new defender.
And the player they have been looking at very keenly is Simunovic. He has been a highlight in another great season for Celtic as they once again won the Scottish Premier League and once again rumours will be swirling that he is set to leave Glasgow for another club. Reports last year suggested that he was set to move to Italian side Torino before that deal fell through, but he might finally leave the club this year now that Newcastle are looking to recruit top quality players for next season.
But while it’s not a surprise to see a player like Simunovic being linked with a move to the Premier League, some eyes may be raised when seeing Ambrose is also linked to Newcastle. He has gained a bad reputation at Celtic Park over the last few years due to a string of poor performances, leading him to finish the season on loan at Hibernian. But with all of his international experience, Newcastle believe he could be a valuable member of their squad.
