Top 50 Players of the EFL – 34th: Marc Roberts (Barnsley)

Barnsley defender Marc Roberts has been voted by you as the 34th best player in the EFL.

Over the last month, we have been gathering votes from you to find the best managers and players in the EFL. And after counting the votes, we have discovered you think that Roberts is the 34th best player in the Football League.

The Tykes were one of the biggest surprises of the season as they ended up being towards the top of the Sky Bet Championship challenging for a play-off spot instead of being in a relegation battle like initially expected. And while many would point to the exciting attack they had, it wouldn’t have been possible without a solid base to build from and that is what Roberts provided.

He was one of the best defenders in the Championship this season as he stopped attack after attack. Most notably he was incredibly strong in the air, so any team coming to Oakwell trying to play long ball usually found Roberts at the other end heading the ball right back to them. Even when Barnsley lost some of their key pieces in defence, mainly when James Bree left to join Aston Villa, Roberts was a mainstay in the back four which helped the club maintain their momentum.

Roberts future is in doubt because several Premier League teams, including West Bromwich Albion, remain interested in signing him but if he stays at Barnsley he’ll be hoping to help them push up the Championship table and maybe even break into the play-offs.
