Sky Bet Championship club Aston Villa are on the verge of re-signing Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on a season-long loan deal for the 2017/2018 campaign according to the Birmingham Mail.

The highly rated 24-year-old Preston born stopper has spent the second half of the current season on loan at Villa Park and has put in a number of impressive performances.

Following the conclusion of the current campaign, Johnstone has returned to Old Trafford however it has been reported that Villa boss Steve Bruce has held positive talks with Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho and a new deal is set to be agreed for the player to return to Villa on a season-long loan from 1 July.

Johnstone made 22 appearances in total for Villa keeping eight clean sheets with his most notable shutout coming in a 1-0 derby day victory over bitter rivals Birmingham City at Villa Park.

The keeper is a product of the Manchester United academy system however the player is yet to make a single senior appearance for The Red Devils. Johnstone has been sent out to several clubs on loan including Oldham Athletic, Scunthorpe United, Walsall, Yeovil Town, Doncaster Rovers (twice) and Preston North End (twice) prior to his temporary spell with Villa.

Johnstone is likely to need to leave Old Trafford to further his career but for now, the keeper remains on the books with the former Premier League champions.
