WATCH Leeds United: 5 down to 1 a season review – four stand out goals

The Sky Bet Championship regular season is a 46 game slog of a journey, with many child-like instances of fans calling out “are we there yet?”

For some of these fans, the ‘there yet’ represents the yearnings for the play-offs, whilst for others it is either the unwanted snugness of an expected mid-table finish or the darkness of a resignation to relegation.

For Leeds United fans, the past few seasons have been somewhat mediocre and unrewarding, but this season has been something a little different. Six games in and in the relegation places  suddenly turned into a play-off charge that, unfortunately, petered out leaving the Whites high-and-dry in seventh place.

Leeds United scored 61 goals across their 46 league games, with Chris Wood scoring nearly 44.3% of them – the Kiwi captain finishing with 27 for the season. Here’s a collection of four of those goals that stood out from the 61 scored.

Soulemane Doukara vs Nottingham Forest

No mention of any of Leeds United’s 61 goals from the past season’s campaign would be complete without Souleymane Doukara’s thunderbolt against Forest at Elland Road.

He’d only just come on as a substitute, trotting up for a corner where he placed himself outside the area. Michael Mancienne’s header out was strong enough, but Doukara’s lashed volley back in was stronger.

Chris Wood vs Fulham

Chris Wood led not only Leeds’ goal tally this season just gone but his 27 goals also won the Sky Bet Championship Golden Boot.

Of all his goals, likely only the late steered-in leveller against Newcastle at St James’ Park could be seen as more vital than this goal against Fulham at Elland Road. But it wasn’t only the lateness of the goal that marked this out as special, it was also the style it was scored with.

Pontus Jansson vs Norwich City

Leeds fans fell in love with Pontus Jansson very quickly after the almost instant successes of his performances after signing on loan from Serie A side Torino. His fist-pumping, chest-beating style of play endeared him almost instantly to the Elland Road faithful.

These fans were wondering just how Jansson would celebrate his first goal for the club. Breaking his Leeds United duck, Jansson leaned back from a corner ball in, heading it back across goal and nestling the ball just inside the Norwich far post. It wasn’t the goal that was special, it was the celebration.

Hadi Sacko vs Preston North End

Youngster Sacko was a surprise inclusion in the Leeds United squad for this year, seemingly coming out of nowhere and signing on loan for the Whites. The loanee from Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon had pace to burn, allowing him to push up the field and get Leeds on the front foot.

Leeds fans grew a little frustrated at the young Frenchman’s wastefulness in the final third, his final ball often being wayward. But there was nothing wayward about this finish, Sacko sprinting clear, dragging the ball back into a shooting position and lashing it beyond the Lilywhites keeper.
