Top 50 Players of the EFL – 50th: Marley Watkins (Barnsley)

Barnsley’s forward Marley Watkins has been voted by you as the 50th best player in the EFL.

Over the last month, we have been gathering votes from you to find the best managers and players in the EFL. And after counting the votes, we have discovered you think that Watkins is the 50th best player in the Football League.
Marley Watkins has had an excellent season at Barnsley, and has helped them enjoy a very successful first season back in the Sky Bet Championship. The Yorkshire club won the Sky Bet League One Play-Offs in 2015/16, and finished 14 in the second tier this campaign. Barnsley lost striker Sam Winnall in January to Sheffield Wednesday, and when they needed someone to step up, that is exactly what Marley Watkins did. The Welshman appeared 42 times for the Tykes in the league, contributing 10 goals, as well as setting up seven for his team mates. Eight of his appearances were as a substitute. It’s fair to say he also put himself about a bit, picking up seven yellow cards, and one red. He’s got an eye for a pass, playing an average of 1.4 key passes per game, with an average pass completion of 72.9%. According to whoscored.com, his average match rating throughout the season is 6.85.
Watkins is out of contract at Oakwell at the end of this season, and after handing in a transfer request halfway through the previous campaign, he is expected to move on. The season he has just had will do him no harm in attracting attention from a number of Sky Bet Championship clubs.
