According to reports in the Daily Star, Newcastle United are eyeing up a bid for Empoli’s young striker Arnel Jakupovic.
The teenage striker was on the books of Newcastle’s rivals Middlesbrough until January, when he left and moved to Italy for approximately £800,000.
And now, reports are suggesting that Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez is interested in signing the striker for a fee believed to be in the region of £6million.
Arnel Jakupovic only made his Empoli debut last Sunday, when he came on in the 88th minute of their victory over Bologna.
This has not deterred Benitez, who is believed to have watched the young striker feature for Austria U19s and U21s, where he has made a reputation for himself as a ‘prolific goalscorer.’
The youngster has scored 11 goals in 23 games at youth level for his nation.
Jakupovic is only 18 years old, but his huge potential is said to be attracting Benitez.
Newcastle United have been linked with several different players since their promotion from the Sky Bet Championship, most notably Yaya Toure from Manchester City.
It was confirmed yesterday that Rafa Benitez would remain as manager of Newcastle United for their Premier League campaign, and his summer scouting appears to be well and truly underway.
Newcastle’s previous Premier League campaign ended in disappointment as they were relegated to the Sky Bet Championship, but Benitez has helped them back to the top flight at the first time of asking, as champions of the second tier.
