Top 20 Managers of the EFL – 5th: Rafa Benitez (Newcastle United)

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has been voted by you as the 5th best manager in the EFL.

Over the last month, we have been gathering votes from you to find the best managers and players in the EFL. And after counting the votes, we have discovered you think that Benitez is the 5th best manager in the Football League.
Many football fans were shocked when Rafa Benitez decided to remain at Newcastle United following their relegation from the Premier League. He began the 2015/16 in charge of world giants Real Madrid, and ended it in the Sky Bet Championship with Newcastle, but he was determined to prove his worth and earn promotion back to the top flight at the first time of asking. Of course, they were odds on favourites to win the Championship title, and that’s exactly what they did. Benitez spent big in the Summer to ensure that this happened, and his signings were spot on. Dwight Gayle’s goals were crucial this year, whilst the likes of Matt Ritchie lit up the league. People will say that it was an easy job for him, but he managed the pressure well, and will deservedly be a Premier League manager next season.
Benitez has experience managing in the Premier League before. He had a successful spell at Liverpool, which saw him lift the FA Cup and the Champions League title. He then moved to Italy to manage Napoli, before moving back to his native Spain to take charge of Real Madrid.
Benitez is expected to have a big sum of money to work with ahead of Newcastle United’s return to the Premier League, and how he spends it will depend on how successful the Magpies are.
