Reading manager Jaap Stam has been voted by you as the 11th best manager in the EFL.
Many Reading fans were left scratching their heads when Jaap Stam was appointed as manager of their club at the start of the season. Of course, everyone knew who he was from his playing career, but as a manager he was unproven. His only jobs were as assistants in his native Holland, at FC Zwolle, and then Ajax. His first permanent managers role was given to him in June 2016 when he took over at Reading FC, and he’s never looked back.
Reading have a relatively small budget compared to a number of teams towards the top of the Sky Bet Championship, but that hasn’t stopped Stam from guiding them to the Play-Offs. He’s built his team on solidity, and Reading have one of the best defensive records in the league. Going forward they haven’t been bad either, but it’s their defence that has guided them to where they are. Of course, Stam was a central defender in his playing days, and this will have had a massive impact on the way his side set up.
The season is not yet over for Stam and Reading, as they prepare to face Fulham in the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Semi Finals. The Dutchman will be hoping that his first full season in management ends with him lifting the trophy at Wembley, and guiding the Royals back to the Premier League.
