Top 20 Managers of the EFL – 12th: Nigel Clough

Burton Albion head coach Nigel Clough has been voted by you as the 12th best manager in the EFL.

It was a tremendous feat just to get Burton into the Sky Bet Championship considering the majority of their history has been played out in non-league football, so no one would have shamed Clough for not being able to keep the Brewers in this league after they stunned everyone by getting promotion last year. Yet despite their small stature, Burton shocked everyone by staying in the league.

It didn’t even end up tense at the end of the season. While they were always nervy of dropping into the bottom three as they were usually in this area, they did end up securing their safety before the end of the season and allowed teams with much bigger reputations to fight it out for their spot in this league on the final day of the season.

One thing that will have made Clough especially happy is that they claimed big wins over their local rivals. Because of Burton’s stature, Derby County and Nottingham Forest used to loan out their youngsters to them because the locality was useful to them, but this time around they ended up getting beaten by the team they regarded as a minnow, both falling to 1-0 defeats. Considering Clough was a former Derby manager and was linked to the job at Nottingham Forest this year, it will have been brilliant for him to get these wins.

Clough would probably be happy to keep Burton in the Championship again, but they may look to push further up the table as well next year.
