Championship side Aston Villa have announced the sale of young defender Niall Mason to Doncaster Rovers, according to the Express.

The 20-year-old is the first confirmed transfer of the summer for Steve Bruce’s side, and departs the West Midlands for a fee believed to be in the region of £200,000.

Mason spent the 2016/17 campaign on loan at the Keepmoat Stadium, helping Rovers to promotion as they secured third tier football for next season.

And his performances have earned him a permanent stay in Doncaster, having signed a two-year deal with the newly promoted club.

He told the Express; “I had a couple of options to go a bit higher up the pyramid, but this is a great platform for me.

“I am working with a manager and coaching staff who know my game inside out and can get the best out of me.

“They’ve all been really good to me and helped me develop, they’re probably the best coaching staff in League Two. They are only going to help me progress as a player.”

The defender played youth football for Real Madrid, Al Sadd, Southampton and Blackburn Rovers before joining Villa in 2015.

However, he failed to make a single senior appearance with the club, and moves on in the hope of playing first-team football on a regular basis.

An Aston Villa statement read: “Niall Mason has joined Doncaster Rovers on a permanent deal.

“The versatile defender spent the 2016/17 campaign on loan at the Keepmoat and has now penned a two-year contract.”
