Wigan Athletic close in on Rochdale winger following relegation

Wigan Athletic are closing in on the signature of Rochdale’s Nathaniel Mendez-Laing according to a report from HITC Sport.

The Latics were relegated from the Sky Bet Championship just a year after returning to the league and while that will have been crushing for the side, they must now look to improving the squad so they can return to the second tier as quickly as they left it. And it seems like they are very close to making their first signing following the drop as they get close to agreeing a deal to sign Mendez-Laing.

The 25-year-old winger has been on form for Rochdale this season, scoring ten goals for the Greater Manchester side as they challenged for the Sky Bet League One play-offs, though they would end up missing out on the end of season lottery. However Rochdale seem unable to keep one of their star players as his contract is set to expire in the summer and while they would like to keep him around, it looks likely that he will be moving on.

And Wigan have made it one of their main priorities to sign the winger and could be able to wrap up the deal in the next few weeks. There does seem to plenty of competition as teams were interested in signing Mendez-Laing back in the January transfer window, but the Lancashire side hope to beat them all out to his signature so they can have their squad ready for next season. They had a lot of success signing in-form League One players the last time they were in this league and will hope that this is another deal that works out for them.
