Top 20 Managers of the EFL – 16th: Phil Parkinson (Bolton Wanderers)

Bolton Wanderers head coach Phil Parkinson has voted by you as the 16th best manager in the EFL.

Over the last month, we have been gathering votes from you to find the best managers and players in the EFL. And after counting the votes, we have discovered you think that Parkinson is the 16th best manager in the Football League.

It was a very risky move for Parkinson to leave Bradford City, where he had become a favourite for getting them to a League Cup final and promoted to Sky Bet League One, to become the new manager of Bolton. After all, they had just been relegated from the Sky Bet Championship and with all their financial issues, looked like one of those teams that might end up getting stuck in the third tier for a long time.

Yet in the end, the risk paid off as Parkinson did brilliantly at Bolton. He was able to transform the squad and stop the rot and get them fighting for promotion from League One. And in the end, that fight would be successful as they would get 2nd place in League One, sealing their return to the Championship at the first time of asking. Only a few teams has been able to do that, with League One champions Sheffield United showing how long it can take for a team to get out of this league.

Now though Parkinson will be hoping to make Bolton a contender in the Championship so they don’t end up back in League One as soon as they left it.
