Northampton Town manager Justin Edinburgh has today confirmed his retained list, which will see a total of five out of contract players leave the club, and a further four more being made available for transfer. In addition to that, central defender Gabriel Zakuani has been offered an extension with the Sky Bet League One club.
Edinburgh helped ensure that Northampton Town avoided relegation this season, eventually ending the campaign in 16th position. He’ll enter his first full season in the job beginning in pre-season and is certainly looking to stamp his own authority on the squad.
A somewhat surprising move by Northampton was the decision to allow goalkeeper Adam Smith to leave the club. He made 40 league appearances over the past season and was undoubtedly the first choice shot-stopper at the club. Edinburgh stated it was ‘an opportunity for me to make a change and try and make us better in that department’. He also highlighted the performances of David Cornell and emergence of James Geoff as part of his reasoning for this as well.
Experienced right back Neal Eardley also leaves, along with Zander Diamond, with the towering centre back being another to have played regularly this season. The ex-Aberdeen man played in 39 League One matches for the Cobblers over the past season but is now free to find himself a new club. Edinburgh stated the impression he got from the player was that he wanted a new challenge. Paul Anderson also appeared 36 times for the club in the league, scoring six goals in the process, however he too is free to head elsewhere. The tricky winger, aged 28, won’t be short of offers. Emmanuel Sonupe completes the list of those not offered new contracts.
Jak McCourt, Harry Beautyman, Raheem Hanley and Rod McDonald have all been made available for transfer as well. McCourt and Beautyman both made 20+appearances each this season. McCourt joined from Barnsley at the start of the season on a free transfer, whilst Beautyman, who previously made a big impression whilst at Peterborough United, also has been with the club for a year.
Players allowed to leave: Adam Smith, Neal Eardley, Zander Diamond, Emmanuel Sonupe & Paul Anderson.
Offered new contract: Gabriel Zakuani.
