Huddersfield Town and Newcastle United are in competition to try and sign Werder Bremen’s Luca Caldirola according to a report from Sky Sports News journalist Marc Behrenbeck.
The 26-year-old defender is coming off the back of a nightmare season where he was only able to make six appearances for Werder Bremen due to a succession of images which has kept him out of action. It seems like this has put off the German side from handing him a new contract and his current deal is set to expire in the summer, meaning Caldirola is set to become a free agent.

And even with those injury problems this season, several teams are looking to sign him up with two of them currently playing in the Sky Bet Championship. Both Huddersfield and Newcastle are interested in signing the Italian defender and could make a move for him when his contract expires. They however will face competition from Stoke City who are also looking to sign Caldirola.
Newcastle do appear that they would have the advantage in this race. They have already sealed their promotion to the Premier League and so can definitely offer Caldirola football at the top level. While Huddersfield do have a chance of getting promoted, they have qualified for the Championship play-offs, their status for next season is still unknown and so will not know what they can offer the defender. They will instead have to concentrate on trying to get promoted before sorting out deals for next season.
