Sheffield Wednesday lead race to sign non-league star

Sheffield Wednesday are leading the race to sign Chester’s Sam Hughes according to a report from the Daily Mail.

The 20-year-old defender is so highly rated by Chester that he is already their club captain despite his tender age but looks set to leave the club in the next few months. He has been tracked by several clubs from the EFL for the last few months and now with his contract set to expire in the summer, Hughes looks set to move to try and test himself at a higher level.

And while clubs such as Aston Villa, Barnsley (Who had a bid of £75K rejected in the January transfer window), Burnley, Crystal Palace, Derby County, Fulham and Wolves are all interested in Hughes and are currently monitoring his situation, it is Sheffield Wednesday that are leading the race to sign him. They have been impressed with his performances in the National League while playing for Chester and while he wouldn’t be a first teamer straight away for the Owls, he could certainly develop into one very quickly.

But while Wednesday won’t have to negotiate anything with Chester due to Hughes’ contract running out, they will still have to pay for him. Due to his age, Chester are owed compensation and Wednesday may end up having to pay a six figure sum to seal this star youngster. But if they believe that he could become a key player for them in the next few years, it would certainly be worth the money.
