Birmingham City set to replace Harry Redknapp in the summer

Birmingham City are set to move Harry Redknapp upstairs and make Steve Cotterill their new head coach in the summer according to a report from The Sunday People via the Birmingham Mail.

It was a shock to everyone when Birmingham were able to appoint Redknapp as their new head coach following the sacking of Gianfranco Zola considering he hadn’t managed in this country since 2015 after his spell at QPR ended. He had however been abroad and managed Jordan for a short while.

But while Redknapp has the massive task of making sure that Birmingham don’t get relegated, he won’t be on the touchline after the end of the season. This report suggests that he is set to be moved upstairs and will become Birmingham’s new director of football so that the club can have a vision going forward.

And this seems to be something that Birmingham have planned for a while as the man who will replace Redknapp is already in the club. The man they are looking at is Steve Cotterill who is currently the assistant manager and it is hoped he will take the role going into next season. He has plenty of experience in the Sky Bet Championship having been the manager of the likes of Burnley, Portsmouth and Nottingham Forest.

His last role was at Bristol City and while he did very well to begin with, getting them promoted from Sky Bet League One and getting over 100 points in the process, the team struggled after promotion and he was given his P45 just half a year after he got them back into the Championship. But now he is set to find himself in a new job as he moves up to become the head coach of Birmingham.
