Rams boss rules out contract offer for Portuguese midfielder

Derby County manager Gary Rowett has admitted that he knows nothing about Portuguese midfielder Alex Soares who has recently been linked with the club according to the Derby Telegraph.

The 26-year-old Lisbon born midfielder currently plays his football with Portuguese Primeira Liga outfit Maritimo however the player could be on the lookout for a new club in the summer with his contract at the Estadio do Maritimo set to expire.

It has been reported earlier this week that Sky Bet Championship club Derby County could offer a contract to Soares while Italian club Genoa are also said to be interested in signing the player. Despite the speculation, Rams boss Rowett has now dismissed the reports and has admitted that he has never heard of the midfielder.

The rumours surrounding Soares’ proposed summer move to Pride Park started out in the Portuguese media and it is likely that it has simply been a case of the player’s agent trying to advertise a move for his client.

Derby County boss Rowett is likely to ring the changes in the summer and bring his own players to Pride Park in a bid to improve the club’s fortunes. The Rams have again been one of the pre-season favourites for promotion to the Premier League but have faltered as the season has gone on.
