Wigan Athletic look to seal move for Rochdale winger

Wigan Athletic are interested in signing Rochdale winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing this summer, according to Sunday’s print edition of The Sun.

Mendez-Laing, 25, has been in good form for Rochdale this season, scoring ten goals in 48 appearances in all competitions.  This has attracted the attention of Wigan, who have sent scouts to watch the winger play this season.

Mendez-Laing began his career with Wolverhampton Wanderers but made only one first-team appearance for the club.  He had loan spells with Peterborough United and Sheffield United before joining the former permanently for around £100,000 in 2012.

The winger made 60 appearances for Peterborough, but most of these came from the bench.  After three more loan spells, he joined Rochdale on a free transfer in 2015.

Despite being a first-team regular, Mendez-Laing has still not signed a new contract with Rochdale.  This means that he is available to be signed on a free transfer this summer.  Wigan look to be favourites to sign the winger, with scouts for the club having watched Mendez-Laing play this season.

It looks likely that Mendez-Laing will sign for Wigan if a deal is offered by the club, as the contract will almost definitely be better than his current terms at Rochdale.

With Wigan looking very likely to go straight back down to League One this season, Mendez-Laing could turn out to be a key player for them next season if he maintains his current form.
