Burton Albion to make move for Wigan Athletic defender

Burton Albion are set to make a move for Wigan Athletic defender Jake Buxton, according to Sunday’s print edition of The Sun.

Buxton, 32, has made 42 appearances for Wigan this season in all competitions, a regular in their defence.  He also scored the winner recently away at Wolverhampton Wanderers.  Despite the three points looking vital at the time, it now looks as though Wigan will be relegated regardless and the defender could be tempted to move.

Buxton began his career with Mansfield Town, making 174 appearances in six years with the club.  He then moved to Burton for a season on a free transfer, helping the Brewers win the Conference National title under the management of Nigel Clough.

Despite a lot of clubs being interested in Buxton, he decided to join Clough at Derby County.  The defender made 159 appearances over seven years with Derby, but was often in and out of the team.  He joined newly-promoted Wigan Athletic at the start of this season for an undisclosed fee.

Currently 23rd in the league table and looking very likely candidates for relegation, Buxton could be tempted to leave Wigan this season and remain in the Championship.  Having played under Nigel Clough twice before, a return to Burton Albion looks like his most likely destination.
