Fleetwood Town’s, Alex Cairns could see himself playing at the Olympic Stadium next season after West Ham target the in-form goalkeeper.
Slaven Bilic has been impressed with the 24-year-old after keeping 15 clean sheets in 29 league appearances. The club are in need of a new shot-stopper after the performances of Adrian and Darren Randolph have been underwhelming.
Cairns joined Fleetwood Town at the beginning of the season on a free transfer from Rotherham. Despite starting games in October, his in-form performance has placed Fleetwood just two points below Bolton Wanderers, who fight to keep their automatic promotion spot. If Bolton fail to win against Peterborough, and Fleetwood win against Port Vale – The Fishermen will find themselves in the Sky Bet Championship next season.
The League One side sat down with the goalkeeper where he put pen to paper and signed a new deal, where a two-year extension plans to keep him at Highbury Stadium for four years.
Cairns said: “This has been my breakthrough season and I’m absolutely buzzing with how the team have done. Onwards and upwards.” [Blackpool Gazette]
What impact can he make for the Hammers?
West Ham currently sit 14th in the league table. With 6 games to go, they challenge Stoke, Spurs and Liverpool. If the Hammers find themselves in poor form, they could be at risk of falling into the relegation zone. Randolph and Adrian have both kept 4 clean sheets out of 22 and 12 appearances respectively.
Cairn’s performance this season could bring some competition for the two current goalkeepers, and potentially could put him in another first choice spot. He has been used as a third-choice goalkeeper throughout his career. He has been noticed for his spells with Leeds United after being released in 2015.
