Experienced defender rules out Newcastle United move

Experienced Stoke City centre-back Ryan Shawcross has ruled out a summer move to Premier League new boys Newcastle United according to the Stoke Sentinel.

The 29-year-old Chester born defender has spent almost a decade in the Potteries but the player is yet to be offered a new contract by his club.

With Shawcross set to enter the final year of his deal at the bet365 Stadium, speculation is increasing about the player’s future. It has recently been reported that Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez would like to sign the defender in the summer however Shawcross has ruled out leaving Stoke City while he is under contract with the club.

Newcastle United made mathematically certain of their place in next season’s Premier League after beating Preston North End 4-1 at St James’ Park on Monday evening. Magpies boss Benitez must now start plotting a successful first season back in the top flight and the Spaniard is likely to begin to compete for a number of his transfer targets.

United boast the second best defensive record in the Sky Bet Championship behind league leaders Brighton & Hove Albion however The Magpies are now set to face some of world football’s greatest attacking players in the Premier League and the club must be well equipped to deal with a more intense goal threat.
