Will Charlton Athletic have an advantage in the transfer window?

Karl Robinson has been praising and making clear the advantages of having Steve Gallen as the Head of Recruitment when he spoke to Kent Live. Could the value that Gallen offers, as a highly accredited coach in a scouting capacity, be an advantage in the summer transfer window for Charlton?

Last week it was announced that Robinson had appointed an old friend of his, Steve Gallen, which he has known for fifteen years, and kept in close contact as they progressed through the coaching game together.

Gallen spent nineteen years at Queens Park Rangers, working his way up the ranks in a coaching capacity. In 2015 he was promoted to the first-team coach before being sacked and replaced later that year by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

After being sacked, Gallen moved on to become the manager of Hong Kong Pegasus for a short while. However, since leaving Hong Kong he has been operating in an informal scouting role for QPR and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Since Robinson’s first interview, where he discussed the initial appointment, he has spoken to Kent Live once again. In his second interview, he discusses the advantage of having a chief scout which is a qualified and highly accredited coach, which could give Charlton Atheltic an advantage in the upcoming transfer window.

“Steve has been temporary manager at QPR, he’s been assistant manager, he’s been first team coach, he’s been U23 coach, he’s been a scout and he’s managed in Asia,” he explained.

“He is somebody with good contacts with the agents. It’s a role I felt that I wanted a coach in, weirdly. Someone who was young and could get around.

“He’s someone that I trust immensely. It doesn’t mean the people before weren’t any good at all. It’s just I know what type of player I like, he knows what type of player I like.

“I’ve known him for 15 years, from youth football right the way through. We’ve never worked together. He’s got really good contacts and is friends with a lot of managers.

“He’s very well respected in the game and he has his pro licence which is the pinnacle of education for a coach.

“One of my criticisms of scouting is only now are we starting to do qualifications. Anybody can turn up and go and watch games. What a pro licence shows me is someone is willing to go two years on a course and learn the fundamentals and finer arts of different skills within the industry. It shows commitment and I like that.”
