Stunning Britt Assombalonga performance the result of fitness and belief

Nottingham Forest head coach Mark Warburton has told the Nottingham Post that Britt Assombalonga’s great performance in the 3-2 win over Reading was down to his fitness and belief.

Assombalonga was the star man as Forest got a surprising win over promotion chasing Reading, practically knocking them out of contention for an automatic promotion spot while also moving them further away from the relegation zone.

The former Peterborough United forward was able to give Forest the lead with a deft finish and then doubled that lead with a header just after the start of the second half. Forest’s other starring man Mustapha Carayol then got a goal when he was able to turn and shoot in the box.

There was plenty of fear around the City Ground when Reading rallied shortly after that goal with Yann Kermorgant getting a brace. But Forest prevent that comeback and were able to get a big win in their fight against relegation.

And Warburton would go on to lavish Assombalonga with praise, saying: “He has had a really nasty injury. I knew Britt from a long time ago. He is a powerful striker with an eye for goal and he can drop his shoulder. He has great pace and desire. I was delighted for him,”

“Players at this level need to get their confidence and belief back and they need to get their fitness levels right. He has worked hard for that.”

“A few of the players have had niggling injuries and it impacts both belief and fitness levels. Britt has worked hard over the last five or six weeks – he has really put the work in. I thought you could see that.”
