Aston Villa and Wolves among Championship clubs interested in Southampton striker

Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers are among the Championship clubs interested in signing Southampton striker Sam Gallagher this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

It is understood that Championship sides Aston Villa, Cardiff City and Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested in Gallagher.  Premier League side Sunderland have also been showing interest, and they also look likely to be playing Championship football next season.  Sunderland manager David Moyes watched Gallagher recently in Blackburn’s game against Bristol City.

Gallagher has spent the season on loan in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers and has had spells of good form for the club.  The striker has scored 12 goals in all competitions for Blackburn this season, having made 45 appearances so far.

Gallagher spent six years at Plymouth Argyle when he was younger but signed for Southampton in 2012.  He made his first-team debut for the club November 2013 in a League Cup games against Sunderland.  The striker impressed and went on to make 20 appearances in his debut season for the club, scoring two goals.

The following season, Gallagher was not involved with the first-team as much under a new manager and was loaned out to MK Dons.  He failed to score in 15 appearances for the club before being recalled by Southampton in January 2016.

Gallagher’s loan deal with Blackburn this season has turned out to be a huge success, and this could mean that he leaves Southampton in search of more first-team football next season.

However, having been a Southampton regular in the past, Gallagher may have done enough this season to force himself back into contention at the Premier League side.
