Sheffield Wednesday fans react to comeback win over Derby County

Sometimes you look at the stats and it looks like everything is against you. It was one of those sort of days for Sheffield Wednesday as they prepared to face Derby County today.

The Owls had won four games in a row but the last time they had managed to win five times in a row was all the way back in 2007 when Brian Laws was in charge. And the last time they managed to beat today’s opponents Derby was back in 2006 with Leon Best and Marcus Tudgay scoring the goals then. Basically, the stats would say that Wednesday would not be getting the win even though they desperately need it with just a few games left in the season.

And it appeared that stats was going to the rule the day again. After a miserable first half, Derby were able to take the lead when former England international Darren Bent was able to head in to give them the lead. And with Wednesday’s terrible record against the Rams, you’d have thought that would be that.

But the best teams have a little bit extra at this time of year and that was certainly the case for Wednesday. First, Steven Fletcher continued his recent good form by heading in after a good passage of play while Gary Hooper got what would be the eventual winner when he was able to smash in from inside the box. But they weren’t the only heroes, with Keiren Westwood making some stunning saves towards the end of the game.

And as you’d expect, Sheffield Wednesday fans were delighted to get the win.
