Karl Robinson plans to take a hardline with Charlton Athletic players

Charlton Athletic manager, Karl Robinson spoke to Kent Live and has made clear that he plans to take a hardline policy when it comes to fitness levels for preseason, to ensure his players are able to implement his football ideology effectively.

The upcoming summer transfer window and preseason are the ultimate chance for Karl Robinson to fully prepare a squad in terms of numbers, ability and key attributes in order to mount a promotion push for the 2017/18 Sky Bet League One campaign.

The former Milton Keynes’ Dons manager is known for a specific type of football style and ideology. Robinson is well known for his 4-2-3-1 attacking formation, the desire to exploit and burst down the wings, and play fearless, fluid attacking football.

An argument which has been espoused since he arrived at The Valley, and one which does have considerable amount of weight, is that the squad he adopted from Russell Slade is one that is not perfectly built for his style of football, nor do they meet the fitness levels required to cover the ground and maintain the aggressive pace of football Robinson wishes to implement.

Therefore, it is absolutely necessary that in the upcoming summer, Robinson ensures he brings in players which are suited to his style of football, but also ensure that all his players maintain the necessary high level of fitness to play the football Robinson believes will allow Charlton to challenge for promotion.

When speaking to Kent Live, Robinson made clear that he will maintain a hardline fitness policy, whereby if his players slack in terms of meeting his requirements they will be fined and required to train harder to get up to the level he expects.

The Charlton manager plans for his players to come in for fitness tests on June 5th and 6th, and will return once again for additional tests on June 12th and 13th. The manager is not prepared to sign any players who are unable to meet the fitness levels he requires.

“We need to see where they are at, to make sure their body fats are right. If they come back in the summer overweight or fall short of the percentages we ask them to, then we will train. And they’re fined.

“So we have to have that mentality and the ones who want to be successful will see that as a support mechanism behind the success. The ones who see that as a chore, so be it.”
