Newcastle United again linked with £35m-rated Premier League midfielder

Newcastle United have again been linked with a move for £35 million-rated Swansea City midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson, according to the Daily Mail.

The Championship side were originally linked with Sigurdsson around a month ago but will face competition if they make a move to sign the midfielder this summer.  It is understood that Premier League sides Everton, West Ham United and now Southampton are also interested.

Despite a slip in form of late and losing top spot, Newcastle United still look as if they will be playing Premier League football again next season.  It is believed that boss Rafa Benitez really wants to compete next season and wants owner Mike Ashley to provide the funds to make this possible.

Sigurdsson has been in great form for Swansea this season, despite their league position.  The Icelandic international has scored nine goals in 35 appearances in all competitions, also registering 11 assists.  Sigurdsson has also spoke of his desire to play for one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Sigurðsson spent a couple of seasons paying for Tottenham Hotspur but wasn’t a regular starter during his second season at the club.  However, with Swansea, Sigurdsson is generally the first name of the team sheet.  The midfielder will have to consider the amount of first-team football he would be getting when he thinks about a move this summer.

Valued at £35 million by Swansea, Sigurdsson may prove to be out of reach for Newcastle this summer.  However, if the Welsh side are relegated, Sigurdsson could be sold for much less than what Swansea would like, as he is very unlikely to be playing Championship football next season.
