Preston North End hope to sign Barnsley midfielder

Championship side Preston North End are hoping to sign Barnsley midfielder Josh Scowen this summer, according to The Sun.

Scowen, 24, has been a regular for Barnsley in midfield this season, making 41 appearances in all competitions.  The midfielder has also weighed in with three goals for his club.  However, he has not been the most disciplined, receiving nine yellow cards and one red card this season.

Preston are hopeful of signing Scowen as his contract expires this summer, meaning he could sign for Preston on a free transfer.

Scowen began his career with Wycombe Wanderers and went on to make 100 appearances for the club after his debut in 2011.  The midfielder started the 2014-15 season very well and earned a move to Barnsley in January 2015 for a fee of £240,000.

Since signing for Barnsley, Scowen has made an impressive 105 appearances in all competitions, making him a key player who the club will not want to lose this summer.  The midfielder’s versatility is also useful for Barnsley.  Despite playing in central midfielder for most of this season, Scowen has also played in defensive midfield and on the right wing.

Scowen is believed to want to move further south this summer.  However, Preston would offer a pay rise which could tempt the midfielder to stay in the north of the country for now.

Barnsley are currently 14th in the league and travel to Bristol City on Saturday.  Preston will play Newcastle United away on Monday evening, looking to halt a run of three straight defeats that has seen the club slip to 10th in the Championship.
