Carlos Carvalhal hails Sheffield Wednesday’s mental toughness following QPR win

Sheffield Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvalhal has told West London Sport that his team have the mental toughness to succeed after getting another hard-earned win, this time against QPR.

The Owls had to work hard to get a win against Cardiff City on Good Friday and because of the Easter schedule, there was no rest before the headed down to London for what was going to be another tough fixture against QPR. But despite the quick turnaround, they were able to get another big win on their quest to get a play-off place.

Wednesday were able to take the lead early on after some good passages of play led to Adam Reach being able to convert, but that lead didn’t last long. QPR were able to get that equaliser when Idrissa Sylla was able to bundle the ball into the goal but just as the first half was about to end, Wednesday got the winner when Daniel Pudil was able to convert when Jordan Rhodes initial effort was saved.

After the game, Carvalhal was happy with his team’s mental toughness to get two hard-fought wins in just a few days. He said: “We are very strong mentally – the mentality of this team is very strong,”

“When you play twice in three days, physical teams can cause you problems and it’s not easy to play twice in such a short time.”

“But we are very strong and the confidence is high. We have four wins in a row and the mentality is really strong, which is why we achieved the three points today.”

“We knew before this game that it was one of the more difficult ones for us. I thought we were fantastic.”

“We have been stronger since the international break and we are showing that we are strong. I am very happy with our players.”

“We are ready for this part of the season. It will be three finals and our focus is on this.”

“This is a marathon and let’s see where our position will be in the marathon.”
