Preston North End could sign winger for £2.5 million

Preston North End could be set to sign Everton winger Aiden McGeady for a fee of £2.5 million this summer, according to the Liverpool Echo.

McGeady, 31, is currently on loan at Preston from Everton and could make the move permanent this summer.  The winger has scored eight goals in 31 appearances for Preston this season, and recently won the Championship Player of the Month Award for February.  McGeady scored three vital goals during the month, two against Brentford and one against Queens Park Rangers.

McGeady began his career with Celtic and went on to make 252 appearances for the club over six years.  The winger then joined Spartak Moscow for £9.5 million, making him the most expensive export from Scottish football.  After four years and 93 appearances, McGeady signed for Everton for a rumoured fee of around £200,000 in 2014.

The winger never really nailed down a first-team place at Everton and, after a loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday last season, he wasn’t given a squad number by new manager Ronald Koeman at the start of this season.

This led to a loan move to Preston, which has turned out to be very successful.  If the Championship side do sign McGeady permanently this summer, it is believed that Everton will make around £2 million profit on the player.

At 31, McGeady has over 400 club appearances and 87 international appearances to his name.  With Preston looking like they will just miss out on a play-off place this season, McGeady’s experience may help the team secure one next year.
